ATTENTION: CO-OP DIRECTORS, CHILD NUTRITION DIRECTORS, PRE-SCHOOL DIRECTORS AND COORDINATORS
The purpose of this memo is to provide
information about the revised nutrition standards for Child and Adult Care Food
Program (CACFP) meals and snacks.
With revisions of the
National School Lunch and Breakfast Program meal patterns which began in 2012,
School Food Authorities (SFAs) were allowed to provide the same meal pattern
for Pre-K students that was provided for students in the K-5 age/grade group. With the new regulations, SFAs that are
providing meals to Pre-K students must comply with the new CACFP meal standards
by October 1, 2017.
The new standards for
meals and snacks served in the CACFP are based on the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, science-based
recommendations made by the National Academy of Medicine, cost and practical
considerations, and stakeholder’s input. These improvements are expected to
enhance the quality of meals served in CACFP to help young children learn
healthy eating habits early on in their lives and improve the wellness of adult
participants. Additionally, the new
CACFP nutrition standards, meals and snacks served will include a greater variety
of vegetables and fruit, more whole grains, less added sugar, and less saturated
Arkansas Department of Education Child Nutrition Unit
(ADE/CNU) will provide information about the CACFP meal pattern revisions in order to
assist SFAs in making a smooth transition and assure that all involved with the
changes are in compliance with these new regulations. This will be covered in the December 1, 2016,
digital learning provided by ADE.
The CACFP meal patterns, both
current and new, are included as attachments to this Commissioner’s memo.
These changes do not apply
to meal pattern requirements for grades K-12 under the National School Lunch
Program in Arkansas Public Schools.
If you have questions
concerning the upcoming changes to the CACFP meal pattern please do not
hesitate to contact your Area Specialist at 501-324-9502.
