Standards for Accreditation (SFA) Short Term Solutions for Background Checks, AP Training, and other flags

The new Standards for Accreditation (SFA) tool continues to identify two major issues:

Background checks and AP training.  ADE is committed to long term solutions to assist districts and schools with accreditation.  We appreciate schools and districts working with us to ensure accurate reporting. Short term solutions will be necessary for the 2018-2019 school year.  Previous memos identified solutions that have already been put into place. The following additional options should help to resolve the remaining issues.

Background Check Flag

Option 1:

If a classified employee is flagging in SFA for not having all three background checks completed within a 12 month period and the employee has recently completed the background checks but the results are pending - the district may open a ticket in SFA and submit a letter on district letterhead stating that the employee has completed the three background checks within the 2018-2019 school year.  The Standards and Systems Support specialist will use the letter as evidence and provide an override for the remaining school year. The district must ensure that the employees clear the background checks because an override option will not be available for these employees in the future.

Option 2:

If your school or school district is flagged in SFA due to employees’ background checks and the employees have not submitted for new background checks within 2018-2019, please have one person from your school/district send an email to simone.blagg@arkansas.gov with a listing of the individuals with issues.

The subject of the email should be“District/School Name SFA Background Check Flag”

For each person please include:the first, middle, and last name; and last 4 numbers of the social security number

ADE will respond to the email in approximately 3 to 4 weeks indicating whether we were able to resolve the issue or if the person needs to initiate new background checks. If there are additional issues where the person would need to speak with us directly, we will notate that as well.

If you have any questions please email them to Simoné Blagg at simone.blagg@arkansas.gov.

Arkansas Department of Education Rules Governing Background Checks are available at http://www.arkansased.gov/public/userfiles/rules/Current/2017/Background_Check_Rules.pdf

AP Training Flag

Option 1:

If an AP teacher is still flagging in SFA for not having 30 hours of documented AP training (renewal every five years) then the district may open a ticket and upload a copy of the AP training certification.  The Standards and Systems Support Specialist will review the evidence and provide an override for the remaining school year.

Option 2:

If an AP teacher is flagging in SFA and does not have the 30 hours of documented AP training then the district should submit a Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement Additional Training Plan to ADE immediately.  The form is available at

Other flags in SFA

Please consult with your Standards and Systems Support Specialists about how to resolve any remaining flags in SFA.
