Memo Text

The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) is pleased to announce the 2019 ESOL Institute.  The ESOL Institute is a professional development program for teachers of English Learners who are seeking an ESOL endorsement or an ADE approved professional development certificate in teaching English Learners. The ESOL Institute is primarily conducted in the summer with on-going support throughout the school year as the participants apply new concepts in their classrooms.

The ESOL institute supports public school districts in Arkansas to provide the personnel and resources necessary to implement their chosen ESOL programs.  An effective ESOL program has an adequate number of highly qualified teachers to provide language assistance services, trained administrators who can evaluate these teachers, and adequate and appropriate materials for the ESOL programs.

Arkansas educators working with English Learners in the classroom on a consistent basis are encouraged to apply to an ESOL Institute.  There is no cost for registration and participants are eligible for a stipend from ADE upon successful completion of the institute.

Participants may also elect to earn 12 graduate credits, which along with passing the ESL Praxis Exam lead to an ESL endorsement. An ESL Endorsement is officially added to the educator’s teaching license upon completion of the 12 hours and the ESL Praxis. Participants who wish to obtain graduate credit are responsible for paying any tuition or fees.  Through partnerships with providing universities, these fees have been greatly reduced for participants of the ESOL Institute.

Priority registration closes Friday, April 19, 2019. All applications submitted by Friday, April 19, will be prioritized via a selection matrix at each university and participants will be selected. Any remaining openings after April 19, 2019, will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis until all openings are full.

Please read the attached document for complete details and registration information.
