Ark. Code Ann. § 6-15-2801 states that a School of Innovation (SOI) is a school that “transforms teaching and learning,” and defines innovation as “a new or creative alternative to the existing instructional and administrative practices." SOI designated schools should be engaged in practices that are intended to improve academic performance and learning for all students. Schools interested in applying to become a School of Innovation must complete and submit the attached Intent to Apply Form by October 29, 2019. Information regarding the application timeline is attached.
The Office of Innovation in Education and the Arkansas Department of Education's Division of Elementary and Secondary Education are collaborating to host the 5th Annual Education Innovation Summit on September 23rd and 24th at the Hot Springs Convention Center. This conference will give participants an opportunity to hear about the innovation happening in Arkansas Schools, and there will be a session to learn and ask questions about the School of Innovation process. A technical assistance meeting to walk through the SOI application process will be held on October 24, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the Arch Ford Education Service Cooperative in Plumerville. Schools who are interested in applying to be a School of Innovation are encouraged to attend.
