APPEL Program Application Process: UPDATE due to COVID-19

 

As the situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) unfolds and more is known, the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) will continue to monitor, adjust and make decisions accordingly. We realize that things will be impacted. We will remain as flexible as possible to serve those who are current participants or are in the process of applying to teacher preparation programs.

Specifically, the Arkansas Professional Pathway to Educator Licensure (APPEL) program will stay in touch with applicants and participants via email and/or the Moodle News Forum (current participants) with any news and announcements.

APPEL 2020 Year One Application:

As Praxis testing centers are now closed through April, APPEL will allow candidates to apply for the 2020 APPEL application window, even if they have not met the testing requirements. They must meet ALL other criteria and fully submit the APPEL application.  The criteria required are:

  •        Transcripts showing degrees conferred
  •         Proof of payment for background check
  •        Two (2) letters of recommendation, including contact information, for person making the recommendation
  •           Passing score reports for Praxis subject assessments are not required for application

If you have registered for a test, you will receive a notification from the testing company or you can check your testing account.  The testing company will give you guidance regarding scheduling new appointments once the testing centers reopen. Once rescheduled, forward the confirmation of registration email you receive from ETS to ADEAPPEL@arkansas.gov .

Those planning to apply to APPEL can apply beginning now without a passing Praxis Subject Assessment score. Those candidates will be placed on conditional enrollment status.  Conditional enrollment allows a candidate to attend the 2020 Summer Academy and accept a position under certain conditions. The Praxis Subject Assessment must be passed before a provisional teaching license can be issued. More details will be laid out at the APPEL Orientation before a candidate will pay and start class in June or July.

APPEL 2020 Year Two Application:

For those who are currently completing Year One of APPEL the participant will follow the instructions to apply for Year Two as laid out in the post “Year Two APPEL Application” posted by the APPEL Program Advisor. Testing over the spring or summer should not affect these participants. However, if you planned to take a Praxis Subject Assessment during this time, then you should schedule for May, June or July.

APPEL 2020 Program Completer Application:

APPEL program completers currently finishing Year Two might be affected by testing in different ways. Please continue to monitor the APPEL Moodle News Forum and email for announcements regarding how APPEL will navigate testing for completers.
