Memo Text

The Office of Educator Effectiveness would like to encourage all interested district leaders to apply for participation in the 2021-2022 Opportunity Culture district cohort. If selected, districts will participate in a grant-funded design process to create new teacher leader roles that extend the reach of excellent teachers to more students, for greater pay, within existing budgets. Opportunity Culture is popular with educators looking to take on leadership roles without leaving the classroom, as well as school leaders who wish to retain experienced educators. DESE is partnering with Public Impact to offer this opportunity.

Why Opportunity Culture?

DESE will give support to districts to provide every student with access to excellent teaching every year.  To do this, we must help great teachers lead from the classroom, where they can extend their reach to more students and help their peers.

This means creating career pathways that allow teachers to assume more responsibility for student learning and help their peers while continuing to teach.

DESE has seen impressive results in Opportunity Culture schools around the nation. These schools have designed teacher leader roles that adhere to five design principles:

Learn more about Opportunity Culture and hear from the educators who are putting this model to work for students atwww.opportunityculture.org.

What support will participants receive?

-Participants will receive technical assistance to: create teacher leader roles, job descriptions, and selection processes; review existing budgets to establish sustainable pay supplements; rework school schedules to give teacher leaders time to meet with and coach their teams; and train new teacher leaders and support staff

-Selected districts and schools will take part in a series of three full-day design sessions during the 2020-2021 school year.

-The grant will cover all costs associated with participation in the Opportunity Culture design process.

The number of grants awarded will depend on available ADE funding.  Participants will be responsible for some travel costs unless the meeting is provided via Zoom.

Do not miss this chance to transform teacher leadership through the career continuum in your district using the resources already available at your disposal.

An informative webinar will be held on March 18th from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. to answer any questions school and district leaders might have about the Opportunity Culture program and this grant offering.
