The purpose of this memo is to provide clarification of guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regarding discontinuation of temporary school meal application approval.            A new Eligibility Manual for School Meals has been published by USDA. Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), Child Nutrition (CN) is in the process of revising and updating the Eligibility Manual for School Meals, for Arkansas school districts. USDA discontinued the temporary approval status:          Temporary approval of an application is no longer applicable because of the year long duration of eligibility provision. After approval of applications at face value, if a School Food Authority (SFA)/Local Education Agency (LEA) is concerned with the authenticity of the information provided on an application, they may, on a case by case basis, verify the application for cause. The paragraph above regarding Temporary Approvals has been omitted from the most recent 7 CFR 245.6 (c)(3)(iii)  All zero income free and reduced price meal applications and applications listing unemployment or workman’s compensation income can be approved at face value for the entire year effective immediately. Follow-up on these meal applications is no longer required.  If you have questions, please contact your Area Specialist at 501-324-9502.
