Memo Text

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued Policy MemoSP-16-2013(12/14/2012 ), “Revised Meat / Meat Alternates and Milk Charts in the Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs.”  USDA Policy Memo SP-37-2012 (7/12/2012), “Separation of Vegetables/ Fruits in the Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs,” separated the sections into fruit and vegetables. The Vegetable Section indicates which vegetable sub-group the vegetable contributes to. These updated charts should be printed and used for determining yield and meal pattern contribution. All previously issued charts should be replaced with these updates. The Grain section of the "Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs" has not yet been revised. However, SP-30-2012(4/26/2012), contains criteria for determining equivalent minimum weights, whole grain-rich recipes, and purchased products. SP-30-2012 and Exhibit A (included in the memo), should be used beginning July 1, 2013, in determining Grain Crediting toward the meal pattern and whole grain-rich requirements. The revised sections of the "Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs" can be printed from http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/resources/fbg_schoolmeals.html.
