Memo Text

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Office, has asked State Agencies to remind schools the meal pattern requirement for fruit (and vegetables) is by volume, not weight. As such, 4 ounce (by weight) pre-portioned fruit cups DO NOT meet the meal pattern volume requirement of 1/2 cup of fruit for Child Nutrition Programs (CNP). The 4 ounce (by weight) of fruit is generally equivalent to 3/8 cup fruit by volume. A pre-portioned fruit cup would need to weigh more than 4 ounces to provide 1/2 cup fruit (by volume) to meet federal meal pattern requirements. Child Nutrition Directors are instructed to DISREGARD ANY manufacturer information stating pre-portioned 4 ounce fruit cups provide 1/2 cup of fruit for CNP’s. Child Nutrition Directors should use the current information posted on the USDA website to determine the weight of each particular fruit that must be served as credit for the 1/2 cup using the Food Buying Guide for Child Nutrition Programs.
